What is Moxa?

Moxibustion is the burning of a Chinese herb called mugwort (artemesia vulgaris) over specific acupuncture points in order to apply heat to the body. There are various application techniques for moxibustion including, the burning of a moxi cigar over top of the acupuncture point or over a needle on an acupuncture point. Due to the fact that moxa is very smoky during treatment, the clinic has obtained an electric moxibustion device, that provides the same treatment as the traditional moxibustion but has no smoke or odor associated with the treatment.

At Lumina we use and infra-red Moxa approach no fire or unwanted smell from the mugwart. The device shines a red light where the treatment is being applied

Function of Moxibustion

Due to its warming actions, the application of moxibustion produces a range of effects on the body which makes it suitable for a vast number of conditions. Moxibustion exhibits immunoregulatory effects by increasing the production of white and red blood cells in the body. For example, it stimulates the production of proteins in the body called interferons that are produced to target the immune system against infections and tumors. Moxibustion improves the circulation of blood and lymph in the local area and relaxes contractile tissue to relieve ischaemic pain and tension in rigid muscles. Moxibustion also induces neurotransmitters, chemicals that are important for regulating pain and spasms and play an important role in neurolological disorders such as depression and anxiety.
