cupping

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a form of Ancient Chinese therapy in which the practitioner creates suction in a cup, usually by means of heat. This draws up the underlying tissues. When the cup is left in place on the skin for a few minutes, blood stasis is formed and localized healing takes place.Cupping has been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, causing tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, clear colon blockages, help activate and clear the veins, arteries and capillaries, activate the skin, clear stretch marks and improve varicose veins. Cupping is the best deep tissue massage available and is very useful and very safe!

Cupping is done when a vacuum is created in a glass jar by either placing a lighted alcohol swab in the jar or using a mechanical pump. The jar is then quickly placed on the skin and the suction pulls the skin up into the jar. Cupping is applied to relax soft tissue by relieving congested energy, blood and pain. The warming and dispersing actions of cupping result in a profoundly increased local blood supply to muscles and skin which provides nourishment to the local area and releases tension particularly in areas of muscle rigidity.

Cupping Methods

Stationary Cupping:

This method is done by applying the cups to the area where they are retained for approximately 10-15 minutes.

Sliding Cupping:

This is a great method of massage and is done by applying oil to the skin and moving the cup, by the suction from the cup, on the area to be treated.

Flash Cupping:

This is a term used to describe the practice when several medium cuppings are preformed several times in quick succession along the area being treated to stimulate it.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping has marked circulatory effects on the body and in particular, improves the circulation of blood within the muscles and joints, removes congested blood and excessive fluid and facilitates the flow of lymph. These actions allow cupping to remove toxins from local areas, re-supply important nutrients to the cells, draw out inflammation, and relieve pain. Cupping mobilizes and stretches soft tissue by pulling it away from the underlying structures.

By relaxing contractile tissues such as muscles and tendons, this allows for increased flexibility and range of motion in previously restricted areas of the body. Cupping influences the bodies peripheral nervous system by exerting calming and sedative effects, allowing patients with stress-related conditions in particular to benefit. Through effects on the nervous system, cupping has additional effects over the digestive function by regulating peristaltic movement and the secretion of digestive fluids.
